Presentation at 2009 Commencement:

The person we honor today exemplifies the great determination and perseverance of many of our non-traditional students.

In 2002, Betty Anne Bevis graduated from Cape Cod Community College and transferred to the University of Massachusetts Boston on a Foster Furcolo Scholarship. As a non-traditional student with a learning difference, married with two children, she was a master at juggling a multitude of community and church activities along with her studies. Her activities included serving as a church youth leader, co-president of Cape Cod Academy’s Parent’s Association for two years, co-chair of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition’s “Against the Tide” event, and summer camp coordinator for the Rolling Ridge Christian Summer Camp for seven years.

She graduated in 2005 with a degree in psychology, however during that time her life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with cancer. This life changing event gave her a renewed sense of the importance of family, education and community. She decided to further her education in graduate school studying family and systems theory. In 2008, Betty Anne graduated with a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, an experience which involved weekly trips to New Hampshire, a full course load and a half-time volunteer internship for two years.

As she wrote in her letter, "Ten years ago when I entered CCCC, I couldn’t have imagined what was in store for me. However, I was prepared for this journey thanks to the supportive environment, help with my learning difference, access to resources and availability of the caring faculty and staff at Cape Cod Community College."

With such enthusiasm for the College, and such excellence in scholarship and life itself, we are proud to honor tonight our Alumna of the Year 2009, Betty Ann Bevis.
